Step conversion vs overall conversion
Step conversion divides a step by the step right before it; overall conversion divides the last step by the first. If 1,000 people visit, 300 sign up, and 12 pay, Visit→Signup is 30% and overall conversion is 1.2%.
Start with the weakest step
The step with the lowest conversion is usually the first place to work on. When the previous step has fewer than 30 people, one or two people move the rate a lot, so the calculator flags those steps and leaves them out of the comparison.
Don't multiply step rates to forecast
If each step was counted over a different period or a different group of people, multiplying the step rates won't match the real overall conversion. Overall conversion only means something when the same people are followed from the first step to the last.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a later step larger than the one before it?
It happens when steps are counted over different periods or different people - for example, this month's visitors next to this month's signups that include people who first visited last month. Check that you are following the same people.
How many decimals should I look at?
One decimal place of a percent. Finer differences are hard to tell from chance unless you have thousands of people.
Are my numbers stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Step names and counts are kept in the address so you can reopen the result, so don't share the link if the numbers are private.
How many steps can I add?
Two to six. Visit, signup, activation, and payment cover most solo SaaS funnels.
